July 4th, 2008

“Wait a second, that’s YOUR Machinima?!”

That’s right, it is! But you can see some of the techniques discussed here used in a large majority of it.  I hope you enjoy it and check out the rest of episodes at http://www.azerothiansupervillains.com

Machinima of the Week - UnStunted Vol II

June 25th, 2008

This week I’m showcasing something very awesome for the Machinima world…

This is UnStunted Vol II, and although it may be the last of its kind done by this artist, it never fails to impress. Basically, this guy has made his own world with custom animations (probably Maya) and custom built models covered in textures we see in the game. He can make these characters dance and do animations never made to happen by WoW developers. Anyways, it is very entertaining just to watch the Gnome dance and fly across the screen. I hope you enjoy, Unstunted Vol II.

Machinima News: DragonCon Film Festival 2008

June 20th, 2008

Have a great film ready to be seen by people in RL?

The DragonCon Film Festival will be occurring on August 29th - September 1st with submissions accepted until July 30th, 2008.

Here are the guidelines:

bullet You do not need to be present for your video to be selected and shown.
bullet Please submit videos that are 10 minutes or less in length. Though it is *possible* that we could show a longer one, it would have to be beyond stellar. An engaging first episode of a series (or, if it would make sense to the audience, even a mid-series episode) is a perfectly acceptable submission.
bullet Please keep in mind that the audience may be unfamiliar with the game in which the machinima was made and there will be no opportunities to ‘introduce’ your video - it must stand on it’s own. Successful candidate videos will entertain and engage the audience without requiring knowledge of the game world in question (a clear and engaging story line, an entertaining music video, etc.). Videos made to show how quickly you and your friends can kill a boss and/or how effectively you have mastered the particular game’s mechanics are unlikely to be selected.
bullet Only one video per author will be selected for the main screening though you can submit more than one for review (it will simplify the process, however, if you submit the single video which you think is your best work).
bullet The machinima videos chosen will not be part of our judged competition (so, no winners, prizes, or entry fee, and the videos’ titles will not be printed in the program book). However, you may also choose to officially submit your video to our juried competition, but then it MUST satisfy additional requirements (and be sure to review the FAQ).
bullet You are welcome to use an existing machinima video you have created OR you can create a machinima video specifically for the Con (though keep in mind submission does not automatically guarantee it will be shown - please see the previous suggestions for likely candidates).
bullet The deadline for submissions is July 30th. You may nominate another machinima video but direct contact with the author will be required to obtain their permission before allowing it for submission.

Tutorial: Layers

June 17th, 2008

Here is a tutorial/tip of the week that should cure myself of answering a lot of emails…

For some reason, a lot of people are having trouble grasping the idea of adding two characters interacting on the same plane with the ModelViewer method. As I detailed in the first episode of H2M, I had two layers: one layer for the background and one layer for the character. If you want to add more characters, add a layer for them. Rinse and repeat for each character you need in the scene.

2

Just remember that the layer system works by placing whatever is on the top in front of the others (I.e. make sure the background is in the back so it doesn’t cover our characters). As a point of thought, depending on the brevity of the scene, I try to minimize the amount of layer use in my main timeline by making separate sequences. And then I add them in separately to make it a bit easier to organize in my main timeline. In other words, I like to convert my five layer scene in one layer, then adding that to my timeline to organize a variety of timelines at the same time.

I hope this tutorial will help you in your machinima needs. Questions? Post a comment.

Machinima of the Week - Red Vs. Blue 39

June 15th, 2008

Let me be the first to say, that THIS Machinima inspired me to do everything in the field. I said “Hey, this is awesome. Why hasn’t anyone done this in WoW yet?” So, I guess you could say, it’s history from there…

Anyways, while this episode starts in the middle of the series, it follows the Red team and Blue team as they battle to be the best team. Simple jokes and simple Machinima; I admire this series for its simplicity while being equally funny and entertaining. It shows how well you can easily make Machinima when the engine was never meant to support it (hence the black bars). Anyways, let this inspire you as it has inspired me.

WHAT’S TAKING SO LONG!?!

June 15th, 2008

Avid readers (I know you’re out there!) know that I’ve been lagging on the site lately. I admit it, I have. I’ve started a new internship and other more ambitious projects that never seem to end. So the new episode of How2Machinima is coming at the end of the month, in some sort or another - you’ll find out soon enough what that means.

I’m going to be more avid about posting new bits as well. Expect one or two updates a week for a bit until I can clear my plate of projects.

Machinima of the Week - Thrall’s Crib

June 1st, 2008

Back for another Machinima of the Week. This one is back in Warcraft…

So this piece, ‘Thrall’s Crib’, is a great parody on the show Cribs, a popular reality show that explores the homes of the rich and famous. The real show really isn’t that exciting. However, LagSpike Films has delivered an amazing piece that, while not technically or graphically amazing, represents and truly idealizes what that show was all about, and makes fun of it in our world of Warcraft. Funny, witty, and entertaining, this movie gives us a lot for those of us who know who the characters are, which is kind of a downside. Regardless, most Machinima enthusiasts will enjoy and laugh. Other than that, go enjoy this wonderful parody and enjoy:

What do you want to see?

May 24th, 2008

Episode 2 looks to be a great success. It’s been 4 days and more than 400,000 views! I’m really surprised. But moreover…

So viewers/readers, what do you want to see next? Is there anything pressing that you want me to explain in more detail? While I have some ideas conjured up on what to do next, if there is anything specific for ANY Machinima needs, I will try to address them in any way possible. Post thoughts/suggestions here.

I’ll be discussing Lighting in the next tutorial for your consideration.
